Beauprez Response to Mexican Supreme Court Extradition Ruling

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. - Rep. Bob Beauprez (R-Colo.) issued the following statement in response to today's Mexican Supreme Court ruling that reversed a 2001 decision barring the extradition of criminals to countries, including the United States, that could face life in prison without parole:

"Today's decision by the Mexican Supreme Court is a victory for the United States justice system, as well as for victims and family members who deserve to see full justice served to those criminals who deserve it the most.

"Prior to today's ruling, prosecutors in the United States were forced to seek lesser charges if the crimes they sought to prosecute -- such as murder -- called for the possibility of life without parole. This situation was unacceptable for all the parties involved, especially the crime victims and their families.

"I appreciate the decision today by the Mexican Supreme Court to overturn this extradition ban. Mexico has been a good friend to the United States, and today's decision ensures that the relationship between our countries will remain strong and beneficial to both countries."
